Let me start at the beginning. My name is Holly. I currently live in Maryland just north of Washington D.C. I just want to let everyone know how important it is to Tip either the waitress and fast food delivery boy(I.E. Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Denny's, IHOP, or any others).
It all starts a few years back when I met my husband Patrick, got married and had a child. He at that time worked for Walmart, and was getting paid top dollar. In July of 2005 our child was born in California, where I am from. On the drive back to Maryland in September of 2005, my husband started to lose feeling all over his body. When we got to Maryland he was admitted to the local hospital and diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disease in which the immune system over acts and attacks the nerves in the brain. Now this has left my husband in a real pickle. He had to leave his high paying job at Walmart and work for the local pizza place because it is the only thing he can really do now. He is always tired and cant do a real job, so this is how we live. At this pizza job he gets paid minimum wage at $6.15 an hour. Sounds like a lot of money? It's not. The only way he pays for gas is on his tips. About 5 years ago he could work 6 hours, take 15 pizza's and come out with at least $60 to pay for gas, and put the rest away in case of maintenance on the car. Nowadays he will deliver 20 pizza's and only get $20. Isn't that insane! We have to buy gas, diapers, formula, common household things, and then try and save up some. We don't even have our own place because housing prices in our area are so outrageous, $1,300.00 for a 2 bedroom apartment, no utilities included. We also have other bills, like medical and insurance. We have over $10,000.00 in Hospital bills from that stay and all the other follow-ups of my husbands condition. Medicaid will not cover us, because we make over $400.00 a month. I think this state is a crap-shoot. We are sleeping on the floor of his grandmothers house. I cannot work because now everyone has some extended education, so employers wont higher anything less. I didn't graduate high school for a reason I am unable to talk about except that I had to get out of where I was.
My family will never have a place of our own, a piece of the American dream. But you can make it possible. By simply tipping your Cabbie, or Waitress, or Pizza Delivery Person, at least $4.00 it will make the world a better place. Taxes will drop, and the economy will soar. Don't believe me? I challenge the whole of the US to do it, do it for a month. $4.00 is a small price to pay for someone to get there ass up and get you your food. If you wish to be lazy, then be lazy and pay for it. $4.00 is less then a stupid Starbucks coffee, it's less then a value meal at your favorite local fast food joint, it is less then a pack of cigarettes(at least around here). JUST TIP! Bartenders, waitresses, cabbies, delivery boys, any one who does something for you, you TIP them!!!!
Please help my little girl grow up thinking anything else but that she is poor. Just remember to PAY IT FOREWARD. What comes around will really go around. And if you don't tip, my husband will deliver your pizza really late the next time. If you tip, or even if you can't tip and you tell him your sorry, then your cool, and he will get your pizza there first and faster overall. Please TIP!!! You may be poor, you may be rich, but if you order pizza then you are asking for some one to work, so pay them for there services. If you are thinking, "Well what's that $1.50 delivery charge for?" I am sorry to tell you my husband only gets like 50 cents of it. It's a scam that the pizza places pull.
My husband recently did a study. He wrote down with every delivery the persons sex, race, and tip. Here are his findings for Laurel, Maryland.
Mexicans tip best with an average of $7.00, next is the white male at $4.00, then white female at $3.00, then black female at $1.50, then at the bottom is the black male at $0.02. Only one out of every 20 black male will tip, and it will only be $1.00. I am sorry if you don't like it, but it's fact. Please TIP. Do you ever wonder why it takes an hour and a half to get a pizza to you? It's because you don't tip!!! Now like I said earlier, if you clearly just don't have it to tip, then don't worry, yours gets there on time, we know how it is, we are poor as well. BUT TO YOU PEOPLE WHO DON'T TIP WHEN YOU ASK FOR CHANGE BACK FOR A $50 Dollar bill! TIP!!! You clearly have it!! And if you don't, don't order pizza!!!!! Plain and simple, tip! $4.00, even $2.00, that will usually cover gas to get it to you. Remember we have our own cars and we pay our own gas and maintenance! If you have a coupon for free pizza, still tip. The driver wont even get his 50 cents when you get your pizza free. So then he is donating his time and money, so please repay him. Thanks.
A message to South Laurel Drive in Laurel, Maryland. You often have your pizza late. You wonder why? You never tip. My husband takes his time getting to your area because he knows you will not tip, so why should he bust his ass for a $0.00 tip! The only time he will get there quickly is if he knows the address tips, then you'll have yours quick. So TIP!!!!!!
If your still confused, then check the rules of tipping page, agreed upon by most people to be "the rules" http://www.tipthepizzaguy.com/nottotip/#correction
Moral of this story? TIP!!! When you do it saves a family.

hey, I am a fellow delivery driver, and although my situation is not as dire as yours, I still have some dreams that I would LOVE to follow up on. I want to go to computer networking school so I can get paid to work with computers...I LOVE working with them. I have NO idea why someone who will obviously tip a waitress 5 to 10 dollars and NOT give a delivery driver anything, BUT, I would love it to change. Are OUR services not as valuable as a waitresses?? Is the fact that we use our cars, our gas, and risk our life lost on you??? Drivers are like the servers at your table, except we dont interact with you as long. We have feelings, we have a more dangerous job than waitresses, we have mouths to feed, educations to fund, dreams to fulfill, just as you do.

I agree with some of what you wrote. Im a pizza driver too and ive been doing this for 22 yrs. Ive worked at dominos and family owned pizza shops in the northen suburbs of minneapolis(middle class). I was raised in a middle class suburb and now im living and delivering in the rich suburbs of minneapolis now. I seen alot in the pizza business over the years. Im working at a family owned pizza shop now and im making more money now than ever before in the pizza business. I believe that you should treat every customer the same(very nice). Why do you want to punish a customer for tipping bad? What did they ever do you? I believe most pizza drivers are getting really greedy. The big pizza chains(dominos,pa pa johns, and pizza hut, etc) are money hungry like there drivers. Family owned pizza shops are the best place to work at. Cry me a river you are very afraid or too lazy to go back and get your ged.
